![]() The Hôtel de Clunywas turned into a museum of medieval art and history in 1843, with the building itself serving as a prime example of that period in Paris’s history. The feeling is one of warmth despite the winter cold and snow. The stained-glass windows glow with warm light from the chapel within, and the archway with its door seems both secretive and inviting. The Christmas morning view shows the Gothic and Romanesque elements of the stone facade blanketed in snow. The detailed view shows the courtyard of one of Paris’s most renowned medieval abbeys, built in the 15th century to house the Abbots of Cluny. This is seen in his undated work, Christmas Morning, Hôtel de Cluny shown on banners from the Crocker Art Museum. While some works of art challenge the viewer, the response evoked by Deakin is one of peace and enjoyment. This visual pleasure of Deakin’s work offers an enjoyable respite from daily life, and a chance to see the world through his eyes. Descriptionĭuring his own lifetime, Edwin Deakin was admired for the beauty of his paintings. 14 banners feature this painting which radiates a warm feeling despite the blanket of snow it depicts. The detail with which the work is painted comes through in the the varied textures of stone and the carefully perched birds at the door. Also from the exhibition come banners featuring Deakin's "Christmas Morning, Hotel de Cluny" which captures the stillness and serenity of a snowy Christmas morning in Paris. The way he captured textures and materials in his still-lifes is reminiscent of the great Dutch Masters, and is seen in his work "The Kitchen Corner" shown on 9 banners from the Crocker Art Museum. His realistic renderings of people, places, and things are luminously painted. Though born in England, artist Edwin Deakin worked most of his life in California, and is recognized as a major California artist. I used my black Posca paint pe n to make it easier to letter.Exhibition: Edwin Deakin: California Painter of the Picturesque Optional: Hand letter your favorite quote, saying or inspirational words on the bottom empty portion of the canvas.For the larger 3 snowflakes you can use your size 1 round brush and thinned down white paint and paint in the fractal snowflake patterns of your choice. You can either free hand the tiny snowflakes or you can use a splatter technique (see YouTube video). Add some snowflakes falling form the sky with white paint.Paint in some red winterberries in the foreground and grey winterberries in the background, using pure red and grey paints and your size 1 round.Using small circular strokes to mimic fluffy snow sitting on the branches. Use your size 4 round and a tiny amount of white paint at the tip of the brush. Paint some snow on your branches (make sure black branches are fully dried).Paint a few more branches in the background using a lighter grey color (4 parts white 1 part black), I switched over to my size 4 round brush because these branches are more detailed and smaller.The bottom branch is where the cardinal is resting on and the the top branch has a heart shaped branch. ![]() Paint 2 large branches with black paint and your 1/4" angled brush.Paint a line through the middle of the beak.Highlight feathers on neck, head and belly of the cardinal.Paint in detailed feathers on bird's wing. ![]() ![]()
